Missoula County, City Accepting Applications for Opioid Settlement Funding

Missoula County and the City of Missoula are now accepting grant applications to fund existing and new programs focused on opioid use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery.
The funding is through the Missoula Metropolitan Abatement Region Opioid Settlement, part of the multi-state settlement with drug manufacturers and pharmacies related to the opioid epidemic. Eligible organizations must fall into at least one of three categories:
Prevention programs
- Evidence-based initiatives targeting school-age children and young adults
- Drug disposal programs, including syringe disposal
- Training for first responders
- Community antidrug coalitions engaged in prevention efforts
- Public health entities, first responders and schools providing naloxone or similar medications
Treatment programs
- Evidence-based treatment following the American Society of Addiction Medicine continuum of care
- Mobile-based intervention, treatment and recovery services
- Trauma-informed support for individuals affected by violence, sexual assault, human trafficking or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
- Comprehensive wraparound services for individuals with opioid use disorder and cooccurring substance use or mental health conditions, including housing, transportation, education, job placement, job training and childcare
- Full continuum of care for treatment and recovery, including supportive housing, peer support services, counseling, community navigators, case management and connections to community-based services
Programs for people involved in the criminal justice system
- Support for pretrial services connecting individuals with opioid use disorder and co-occurring conditions to evidence-informed treatment, including medication assisted treatment
- Support for treatment and recovery courts providing evidence-based options for individuals with opioid use disorder and co-occurring conditions.
The MMAR committee, comprised of city and county elected officials and staff, determined funding priorities and eligibility criteria. The committee is charged with committing up to $750,000 annually to qualifying organizations. Up to three years of funding is available for fiscal years 2026, 2027 and 2028, and up to $500,000 may be awarded for one-time costs or distributed over the three-year period, at the committee's discretion. Existing programs will be prioritized over new ones. The application deadline is rolling, but only those received by Sunday, May 18, will be eligible for consideration for the first round of funding.

The committee will begin reviewing applications in late May or early June. The meeting will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 206 of the County Administration Building. The committee expects to announce recipients for the first round of funding in late June or early July.
